We are using the community accessibility theme to talk with kindergarten students in our school corporation. This is our first year to attempt this type of visit, so we will visit just one of the three elementary schools. A total of 115 children, their teachers and staff will participate. Accessibility is a friendly introduction to this age group of people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). We are using the experience to raise the similarities between them and their peers who have I/DD. We are reading a few books and have some discussion time planned. |

Among the things you will learn are:
•What it takes to become a successful Captioner;
•How Kathy learned American Sign Language and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), or captioning in real time;
•How she helps people with hearing loss achieve their goals and remain independent
And you will experience, first-hand, the different degrees of hearing loss that can occur, after which, Kathy says, you will never “just speak louder” to anyone! |
